East River Energy Receives 2010 Connecticut Green Business Award for Green Energy Retailer

Company Honored at a Yale University Reception

Guilford, CT – East River Energy, a full service heating and cooling energy company was honored recently by receiving the 2010 Connecticut

Green Business Award for Green Energy Retailer. The Award recognizes East River Energy’s contributions to Connecticut’s green

economy revolutions and commitment to providing a green source of energy – BioHeat. East River Energy was one of 25 companies awarded.

When East River Energy opened in a small State Street office in 1984, a major goal for the family-owned petroleum distributor was to serve the community as a good corporate citizen. Going green is a natural outgrowth of that pledge.

In 2004, the company began offering five-percent soy-based home heating oil. The “BioHeat” oil blend makes for cleaner burning, which benefits the environment as well as home heating systems. Bioheat is a mix of low-sulfur heating oil and the natural, reusable fuel BioDiesel. In its pure form, BioDiesel is biodegradable. It’s produced domestically from renewable resources – decreasing foreign oil dependency- and can be mixed with petroleum diesel to create a BioDiesel blend. Characteristics are similar to those of heating oil, allowing a customer to switch to the more efficient Bioheat with little difficulty.

The company’s own fleet of more than 50 vehicles serving its home, commercial, municipal and other customers throughout the Northeast, is running on Biodiesel.

East River Energy also sells highly efficient heating and cooling equipment that helps reduce the user’s carbon footprint.

David Rettig, Retail Manager at East River Energy, accepted the award on behalf of the company.

The award reception was held at the Yale School of forestry & Environmental Studies Kroon Hall. The awards were selected by Business New Haven & CONNTACT.com.  The ceremony was hosted by Daniel C. Esty, Director of the Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy.
